✍️ Fishers Digest is hiring a writer

Almost one year ago, I started Fishers Digest. Why? To make local news less boring. It was actually an experiment, and I did not expect it to become a business. But hey, things change. I think it’s doing a good job, so it’s time to bring on some help.

I’m looking for a part-time writer for Fishers. If you’ve never written a word before, that’s cool. Experience is not a requirement. I’m looking for killers who are hungry to learn and try something new. Think you’re up for it? Job app here.

What do you think of Indy’s branding?

We’ve all heard of Indianapolis as “The Crossroads of America” or “Circle City.” Well, all of the city’s biggest influencers are coming together to create new branding. Why? Let’s hear it from the Indy Chamber:

“While all are apt functional descriptions of our city, none offer immediate, broad association with Indy or make the compelling emotional connection necessary for long-term resonance.”

Here is the property tax trend in Fishers

This week, property tax assessments hit your mailboxes. I wanted to know the general trend for the city and share it with you. So here you go!

Almost 90% of respondents in this Fishers Digest poll shared that their property taxes went up 🤯 While the tax rate from the schools is now lower, many property values have skyrocketed, and some readers reported as much as hundreds of $ more. Oof.

If you think your assessment was incorrect, you have until June 17th to file an appeal. Here’s what that process looks like in Hamilton County.

🏎️ Two more weeks till the greatest month in Indiana

The 500 Festival is set to kick off May 1st, as it has for the past 60+ years. These festival planners organize some of your favorite events, like the Indy Mini, 500 Breakfast, 500 Parade, and more. Here’s a few events to think about seeing outside the race itself!

> The 500 breakfast will feature Mario Andretti, who you probably know is building an HQ for their race team here in Fishers. Tickets are $100, and $1200 for a table.

> More than 200,000 people will line the streets of downtown Indianapolis to celebrate the return of Indy’s biggest celebration before the Indianapolis 500. It’s such a big parade that it will be live-streamed on Peacock. To buy tickets for the parade, go here.

Touch a Truck

One of the most popular events year after year is the Fishers Touch a Truck event. Just about every “non-normal” vehicle the city owns will be available for you to come see, touch, sit on, you name it. Mark it on your calendars for May 21st!

Local Author Fair

Why go to a local author fair? To get the inside scoop straight from the source. It’s the perfect place to uncover new genres, meet your local authors, and maybe even get inspired to pen your own tale. Saturday (04/20) at the Forum Event Center from 1-4 pm.

Earth Day 💚 💙

Earth Day is on Monday, but most community events are happening this weekend. If you want to get out and help clean up our Earth, here’s a list of events. (PS It’s the same list as Tuesday)

It’s a really strange and sad story, and you can go down a rabbit hole by looking up “Bob Hickman Indy” on YouTube or Google. Anyway, he listed his van sale this week, and is advertising it as the “most holy vehicle in the world.” Here’s the video.

The City of Fishers and the Towne Poste curated over 400 letters and items from residents over the past year for a time capsule. If you want to see some of the items in there and learn why there’s a can of Diet Coke in there, read their blog here. (link)

Gas in Indiana will be more expensive next month.

Indianapolis has closed parts of Fall Creek while they expand the Nickel Plate Trail to the fairgrounds. They post weekly progress updates on their construction tracker. (link)

Caitlin Clark, who was drafted 1st overall by the Fever, is making massive waves in basketball. 1) Her starting salary (around 70k/yr) is about as much as you’d make as an accountant right out of college in Cincinnati. 2) She’s selling out games. Two separate teams announced they had to upgrade to larger venues to support the number of people trying to attend her games.

Local Business

Supporting senior artists 🖼️

Last week, almost 100 seniors at Fishers and HSE showcased their art at the Fishers Art Gallery. Some won awards, and the exhibits from all are available to see until April 26th. And if you’re looking for some new art in your home and want to support these students, here’s a few pieces available online. Over a hundred more are available in person at the gallery located at 11810 Technology Drive. They’re open every Monday-Thursday from 9-5 pm.
