Here’s a more real example. Which would you rather eat at:

  1. A restaurant with 4.8 stars and 750 reviews
  2. A restaurant with 3.7 stars and 1400 reviews

While restaurant B is not a bad restaurants by any means, option A rates much higher, more often. It’s also possible that restaurant B inflates their review count with more marketing. This isn’t a bad thing. But it felt important to make sure the playing field is as even as possible.

So here’s how our weighted score works:

  • Restaurants with over 500 reviews and at least 4.5 stars received a 2x boost to their weighted score
  • Restaurants with fewer than 500 reviews or 4.5 stars received an average of their rating and number of reviews. No boost for them.

This method ranks restaurants by their popularity and dining quality. 500 reviews and at least 4.5 stars is a significant achievement!

💡 If you want to nerd out and try it out for yourself, here’s the exact formula:

=IF(AND(C2 >= 4.5, D2 > 500), C2 (1 + D2 / 1000) 2, C2 * (1 + D2 / 1000))

  • C is the stars rating
  • D is the total number of reviews

So with this system, we took every restaurant with a Fishers address that serves American food (burgers, barbecue, fast food, bar food, steaks, etc) and sorted them. This list is entirely based on Google’s data.
