Introducing the Fishers Freight: A new era for Fishers

Fishers Freight Logo

The excitement is building in Fishers, Indiana as a new Indoor Football League team prepares to make its debut at the state-of-the-art Fishers Event Center in the spring of 2025.

The team’s official name is the Fishers Freight. The name was announced on Friday, December 15 at the Fishers Fuel Tank. The announcement marks a significant moment for Fishers as it embraces its rich history, the Nickel Plate train, and looks to the future of sports and entertainment in Central Indiana.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Nickel Plate Train

Why “Fishers Freight”? The name pays homage to the town’s history deeply intertwined with the railroad industry. Fishers, formerly known as Fishers Station and Fishers Switch, has a storied past connected to the railways.

To honor this heritage, the team’s colors are high visibility yellow, steel blue, and black. The iconic Nickel Plate Road train sported the same colors as the team’s main logo.

The team falls under the ownership of Jim Hallett, through his holding company, Indiana Football Club LLC. Hallett also owns the Indy Fuel, a minor league hockey franchise. The Indy Fuel will soon be known as the Fishers Fuel. The same group that manages the Fuel will also manage the football team.

Hallett expressed at the unveiling, “We wanted to pay homage to the history behind the city we will be calling home. We’re very excited to be the Fishers Freight and can’t wait to begin playing in the Fishers Event Center.”

Support from the City of Fishers

The city of Fishers warmly welcomes the Fishers Freight as a proud representative of the local community. Mayor Scott Fadness shared in the excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to have the Fishers Freight representing this community and continuing to help build the new event center into a hub for sports and entertainment. We look forward to bringing affordable family fun experiences to Fishers, and I’m grateful for everyone who has worked tirelessly to make it happen.”

Community feedback

According to public polls and surveys run by Fishers Digest, the Fishers Freight name is still gaining acceptance within the community.

  • 45% of readers voted they were a fan
  • 20% were not a fan
  • 35% are still deciding

The data suggests a promising trend for future acceptance. The majority of “no” respondents to the new name felt the name was insensitive. The City of Fishers administration that built the new Community Center and helped create the Fishers Freight also tore down the train tracks in 2015. The Nickel Plate Train is a vital part of Fishers’ history. Today, the tracks have been replaced with walking trails that connect Fishers to Indianapolis, Noblesville, Carmel, and even Westfield.

Fishers Freight Kick off

The first season of play will start March 2025, when the Fishers Freight will take to the field in the state-of-the-art Fishers Event Center.

The new facility promises an unparalleled fan experience, complete with modern amenities and a vibrant atmosphere. As the city eagerly awaits kickoff, excitement and anticipation fill the air for this new chapter in Fishers’ sports history.

Indoor Football league seasons are about the same length as a National Football League (NFL) season, with 16 games played. 8 of those games are played at home, and the remaining are played throughout the country. The season plays from March to July.

The top 8 teams, 4 from each conference, enter a 3-round contest to win the prized title of “IFL National Champion”.
